MINGA LONDON: A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

By adminblog

Founded by Luísa Vilaça in 2014, Minga London has become a favourite online store for aesthetic, vintage-inspired, Tumblr and grunge fashion clothing for girls the world over. Its range of 70s-inspired daywear especially, from shrunken tees, embroidered cardigans, skater jeans and crop tops to statement miniskirts and patterned dresses, flaunts an appeal of its own to the young and bold who find in it, representation for every mood, feeling, season apart from the aura. Moreover, it works hard to provide its diverse range of customers with an equally diverse range of outfits at affordable prices. It goes as far as to provide students with an additional discount of fifteen per cent and that is exactly where its genius lies. As such, it is only natural to ponder the story behind the brand’s rise to prominence in the global arena.

Minga London stands to be a complete antithesis of the current trend of start-ups initiated by millionaire entrepreneurs who have run out of ventures to explore.  Rather, the brand began its journey by selling t-shirts tie-dyed in bathtubs at markets across the eponymous capital. Now, Minga has its very own factory in Portugal where products are designed, sewed and dispatched under one roof by an exclusive creative team.

created with love, smiles and skilled hands.

The latest drop of colourful clothing that chimes with retro rainbow vibes practically yells that Minga London is anything but careless, fast fashion. Minga is proud to say that its employees are well looked after and that reducing the impact of production on the environment is something that the brand is continually mindful of. Though raw materials could be obtained at cheaper rates from abroad, Minga chooses to buy fabrics from local companies in Portugal instead to ensure that it is paying a fair price. The clothes that we so covet are all designed in small batches and if pieces don’t sell out, they are recycled into new items that are worthy of drooling over. Minga takes particular care not to use hazardous chemicals in production while endeavouring to switch to more organic fabrics and find just the right sustainable suppliers who also happen to share common ethical codes. What’s more upstanding is that the aw-instilling in-house team works no more than five days a week and if an employee wishes to do overtime, they are paid a hearty extra for it. Besides, all the magic takes place in one factory as aforesaid and the whole team eats lunch together!

“We take human rights seriously.”

Minga London seeks in its employees only creativity, boldness, respect, honesty and dignity with no regard to race, gender or age. It does not allow any form of harassment or mistreatment and strives to provide safe working conditions for its lifeline that is found in its workers with a stringent policy against child or slave labour.

we’re one big creative family.

True to its name, ‘Minga’ that means voluntary communal work, the studio comprises of a family as tight-knit as its cardigans, working together on every stage of an item’s journey: from idea to sketch, from sample to finished product. Everyone who works at Minga is free to express themselves however they want. This is a tradition that is believed to be the only way to achieve the brilliant things they do. From their pattern curators to the finance managers, everyone works when they want, side by side laughs when they want and occasionally, even have parties together.

all weirdos are welcome.

Connecting over a mutual love for vintage-inspired clothes, the design team curates exclusive themed collections to bring us consistent outfits that are each so unique and special they cannot be found anywhere else.

we’re all about young talent.

Identical to its target audience, Minga London, in its work, engage with fresh new models and emerging photographers and videographers from all around the planet who are real people on the verge of exploding into the music, fashion or the art scene at any moment. It favours models with strong personalities and a cool, individual style. So, if you are good at what you do and are ready to change the world, Minga London would love to work with you. Most of their collections are also shot in their own studio in correspondence with the majority of every other aspect under their banner.

Soon after the brand’s initial success in 2014, it started selling its veritable products online on eBay and as you would have thought, aced it there too. However, Minga’s road to triumph wasn’t all that straight: there were bumps around and about. Like a moth to a lamp of light, the company faced certain swindles which were why they created their own website in 2016 and well, the rest is history. Therefore, from tie-dying in bathtubs for bartering in a city to building a sizeable internet empire that ships its products worldwide, Minga London has undoubtedly come a long way that would make one arrive at the conclusion that if not you, this vibrant community of weirdos shall indeed make you say goodbye to your basics.
