We all love to flaunt the easy going and always in-trend silk material when it comes to fashion. It makes you feel soothing while it adds a touch of elegance to your look. Silk has been in demand for years now and it have never disappointed the style lovers with its lustrous fabric. Although, the fabric is high maintenance, it is a pleasure to don one.  But what when it comes to maintaining them? A fabric as delicate as silk will always make you a little nervous for its maintenance. You need not worry about it now; we have brought to you some safe and easy ways to clean your silk fabric effectively.  Right from a subtle hand wash to a machine cleaning and also the dry cleaning, we have it all in place for you.

While you are washing your silk clothes at home, you should strictly consider that a fabric as luxurious as silk tends to bleed its colours. So kindly keep it separate from other clothes while washing it. Yet, a check for colourfastness is a must, so dab an inconspicuous area with cotton and if the colour bleeds heavily take it to the cleaners. If it does not bleed, you move forward in the process, follow the below steps:

  1. Fill a tub with cold water.
  2. Add a washing detergent that is silk friendly.
  3. Turn the cloth inside out.
  4. Let the silk cloth soak in the water for about 30 minutes.
  5. Rinse the silk cloth well.
  6. Now, place the cloth in a white towel and fold the towel to gently remove the excess water. Do not squeeze the cloth as it can lead on to unwanted wrinkles.
  7. Once squeezed, open the fabric and lay it flat on a drying stand. Do not dry it under the direct heat of sun to take care of its shine and hue.
  8. Steam the iron to avoid wrinkles.
  9. Once steamed, you can iron the fabric as advised in the care label, preferably on a low setting.

The above-mentioned steps prove very beneficial if you want to clean you silk at home and pamper it a bit. The process is smooth and will not cause any harm. Silk has a tendency to quickly release the dirt as compared to other fabrics so the process is not even time consuming. Do keep in mind that the detergent used in this process needs to be silk friendly, a harsh detergent can cause damage to the fabric and ruin its appeal. Also, do not wash silk with alcohol-based products. In case your fabric is stained, do not just wash the stained spot and instead wash the entire item. Washing just the stained spot can make that particular part turn lighter and damp as compared to the rest of the cloth.

With the rise in technology and convenience, certain washing machines have designed themselves in a way that can successfully wash a material as rich as silk. You can set the temperature at 30 degrees or 40 degrees Celsius and put the fabric in the machine. Provided, great care is taken of the fabric.

Silk garments that are badly stained or bright in colors should be taken to the dry cleaner. Trying to remove the stains with a stain remover at home can be a risk as it can either make the fabric look damp or ruin the print. The above-mentioned washing tips will certainly help you in taking care of your gentle silk fabric and maintain its shine.
