How to keep your clothes as fresh as new? Well this may sound quite unreasonable to most of the people out there and if you are one of them read on to find simple tips that can give new brighter life to your clothes. Clean, fresh laundry has more to do with the technique you use, than the choice of detergent or equipments.

So here are some hacks which can ensure that your clothes remain clean, damage-free and fresh even after frequent washes.

Always sort the pile of laundry by color and fabric material

Whites should be washed separately. Even light colors can spread to white clothes taking away their sparkling shine. Moreover it is advisable to wash lighter shade clothes separate from the deeply colored ones. While washing clothes the fabric should always be kept in mind.  Fabrics such as cotton, silk,

wool, nylon etc have varying drying speeds and thus it ensures that they are washed optimally. Towels, blankets, bedcovers should never be washed with daily laundry as they produce a lot of lint which can damage our apparels.

Never use excess of detergent

Too much detergent sticks to the dirt, instead of removing it and can leave white patches to the freshly laundered clothes. So there’s a high probability that our clothes become dirtier after washing.

Wash in cold water

Hot water wears out fabrics more quickly. Save the hot water for really soiled clothes such as kid’s uniform, sports jersey, sheets and wash everything else in cold water. This way the garment won’t lose its shine and the threads will also stay strong.

Pre-soaking

This technique has been popularly practiced since ages and can make huge difference in getting clothes really clean. Letting your laundry soak for a few hours helps the stains to come lose and be removed more easily. This not only saves your extra effort but also ensures the tidiness and brightness of your clothes.

Air dry

Dryer heat damages fabric over time. Dryers cause shrinkage, color fading, and weaken the material fibers. Practice line dry clothing outside, or indoors on a drying rack.  Plastic hangers, tension rods can also be used for that matter.

Wash clothes inside out

Items with beading, embroidery, appliqués and other details should always be washed inside-out. Protect the important part of a garment by turning it inside out before washing. This way the embellishments, screen printing on the garment remain preserved.

Avoid synthetic bleach

Natural brighteners like vinegar, 1/2 cup lemon juice won’t wear out the fibers of your clothes the way chlorine bleach will. This can make your whites even brighter. Plus it’s better for the environment.

Fighting tough stains and spots

Dirty collars and cuffs can be a nightmare for many of us. So here’s a remedy for that. Using half cup each of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda along with 1 cup of warm water works like a miracle for such dirt prone areas.

Storage

While storing seasonal clothes mothballs, naphthalene balls or cloth friendly repellants must be used. Alternatives such as lavender oils, cedar, herbs can also prove to be effective. Essential storage practices not only protect your garments but also avoid the musty smelling wardrobes.

Never use plastic

Storing clothing in plastic bags can prove to be harmful as plastic breaks down over time and can interact with the fabric, which can weaken it or change the color. Plastic can also trap in humidity that can lead to mildew damage. Garments remain fresh only when allowed to breathe, so wrap them in plain cotton sheets or a cloth garment bag to keep them safe.

GENERAL CARE TIPS

  • Spray perfumes on before you get dressed. The alcohol content in the spray can discolor, fade or stain clothes.
  • Never hang wet clothes or towels in your closet as it can attract mildew, leaving your closet smelly.
  • It’s important to rotate your sweaters and jackets just the way we do with our shoes as it allows them to breathe and also enables them to regain their shape.
  • Never let your clothes dry in the sun for too long. Excessive sunlight can fade the colors on your clothes. Moreover dyes are sensitive to prolonged sunlight.
  • While changing out clothes make sure to let your suits, coats and shoes dry out for at least thirty minutes before storing them in the closet. Never throw your clothes over a chair, bed as it creates unnecessary wrinkles.
  • Make sure to check the clothes thoroughly before storing them for the season. Untreated food, beverage, lotions and even makeup can leave tough stains and can even attract insects, moths.

This was a list of hacks that you could follow with caution, and keep your clothes as fresh as new without any fret.
