Wash and Care tips for your Woollen at Home

By adminblog

First things first, check the label of your garment to be washed.Read the instructions (no hurries there), and of course act likewise. Wool processing technology allows your woollen to be machine washed and tumbled dried without shrinkage. But you need to have a good look at care instructions provided on the labels. So that will ensure your woolen garments remain in great condition.

Now talking of wool, it is very resilient fiber, really breathable and great thing about it, it doesn’t need washing much often. Saying that washing your woolens frequently can actually damage the fibers and your knitted garment will start to age prematurely and knowingly you don’t want that, unless… it is your mom’s that favorite sweater, she always wants you to wear.

Look after your wool

Have washing machine at your home, then don’t bother (feeling relieved, right?) well, this time let your hands do some. Coming to the point if you want to really look after your wool, it needs to be hand washed. And unlike the rest of your laundry it needs very gentle detergent (yes, they are soft hearted). So you can buy wool detergents and whichever one you use, follow instructions on the packet. For most of them you just  need to put one cap full of your detergent in tub/bucket filled with warm water…….read that again. Warm water nothot water.  (Using hot water may lead you to……this)

Moving on, make sure detergent has mixed properly. Put your garment in there and be nice to, clean it gently and rinse it as soap is coming out of it repeat it until no more soap is coming out. Once you’ve done that and your garment is nice and clean you need take it out. So a skinny person like me may need help for that as it would be heavier. Yes, as you know wool is very nice absorbent. So take out excess of water from it by gentle squeezing. Don’t try to ram it or curl it or tie it to the door knob and twist it till you’re out of breath. (Just… gentle…. Squeeze)

 WRONG RIGHT

Technically speaking when you twist your garment you damage its fibers that’s why lots of emphasis on not twisting it. Now to dry your woolen piece, take a dry towel ( you know why dry right???), lay it open on some clean surface take your garment to try to remove as much as excess water out of it and put it on the towel with one or two folds so that it fits into a towel. And then roll the towel over it as if you are wrapping a swiss roll. Then press on it to get more of that “excess water” out. And after your done with it open up the wrap open up the garment and lay it flat onto the towel to let it dry. And be patient, don’t put it under any kind of heat. Don’t put it under the sun or radiator or whatever.

Once it is dry and you’re ready to press it get your ironing board out or whichever clean surface you use for pressing clothes. You need to be working with steam iron. But don’t ever press down your iron on the garment just gently steam through it while holding the iron bit above the surface of your garment.

Iron

And if you don’t come to have steam iron then boil some water and put your garment above the vessel so that it catches all the steam it wants. No!!!! never !!!! you are not doing that. Don’t have steam iron don’t bother, we’ll make use out of your regular iron. So take that regular iron of yours accompanied by a clean tea towel/dish towel.

Well a tea towel (as the British call it) or dishtowel (as Americans call it) is a piece of cloth made of linen or cotton or both, employed to dry dishes, cutlery, etc in the kitchen after they have been washed. But nowadays those people have inclined towards the use of paper made kitchen towels and contributing their share towards environmental crisis.

So cutting all this general knowledge crap and focusing on our main task use any clean cotton cloth lay it atop your woollen garment and then press it with your regular conventional iron to give the same effect of steaming the fabric flat.

        How To Maintain Woollen

  • After wearing, brush woven garment lengthwise to remove surface soil, which may lead to stains later. To remove food odours lay you garment flat on bed or towel for an hour.
  • After unpacking or wearing woollen clothing can be refreshed by hanging them in steamy bathrooms lighter wool fabrics are a bit stubborn by nature so you’ll have to give them time to adapt things and lose their wrinkles.
  • For storing gently fold the knitted ones and hang the woven ones on shaped or padded coat hangers.
  • And the most irritating thing of all pilling, pilling occurs in all kind of fibres and is caused by abrasion on the fabric surface. Pills can be easily removed from woollens and in most cases drop off (but they irritate a lot).

So enjoy your winters and show off your winter collection. Stay healthy and stay happy.
