The total number of COVID-19 cases climbed to more than 450 after the states across the country reported more cases following the Tablighi Jamaat in Nizamuddin, Delhi. Which emerged as the biggest hotspot of the novel coronavirus outbreak in India. The total number of active cases in the country stands at 1,860 and the death toll at 53, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s website.

The Markaz in the south Delhi neighbourhood organised a Tabligh-e-Jamaat between March 12-15. At least 2,000 people including foreigners and Indians from across the country, attended the gathering. On 29th, many residents of the centre started showing symptoms fro COVID-19 and police and paramilitary officials locked down the area but authorities fear a possible spread of the virus.

Markaz Nizamuddin, the international headquarters of the Jamaat for nearly 100 years, has said when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the “Janta Curfew” on March 22, they discontinued ongoing programmes but a large number of people were stuck there because of the closure of transport services.

A Union Health Ministry official said that 400 people who participated in this gathering have been tested positive for COVID-19. This has actively jacked-up India’s total number of cases. And the states across the country continue to trace and test the people, who participated in the Tablighi event. As many of them left for their homes. Out of 1,548 people who reminded back at the centre, 441 moved to hospitals and 1,447 to quarantine facilities.

50 have tested positive in Tamil Nadu, 24 in Delhi, 21 in Telangana, 18 in Andhra Pradesh, 10 in Andamans. One each in Assam and Kashmir who attended the gathering. 824 foreigners from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan and Saudi Arabia, travelled to different states. Police chiefs collected their details.

On 2nd April, PM Modi held a virtual meet with the chief ministers of all the states to take stock of the current situation and urged them to come up with a common exit strategy to ensure staggered re-emergence of the populace at the end of the 21-day nationwide lockdown period on April 14.
