Are you totally safe from coronavirus?
While people are being cautious of not contacting other people and not touching places or things that might be a viable source of infecting them with COVID – 19. We also have to be aware of infections through clothes (clothes also used to wipe your phone and other devices) and utensils that we use daily. Though researchers say that it is rare to become infected by handling biologically infected garments, but it not guaranteed. why take the chances, right?
One way to disinfect garments is to wash them or get them dry cleaned while wearing rubber gloves and properly disposing of the gloves after you’ve done the laundry. Sanitizing or disinfecting your clothes at home can be easily done using the following steps (Laundry disinfectants):
1. Pine oil Disinfectants:
Products with 80 percent pine oil as one of the ingredients can be added in hot or warm water at the beginning of the wash cycle which can be used for both white and colored fabrics.
2. Phenolic Disinfectants:
These are also effective when added to hot or warm water and can be used for both white and colored fabrics. Lysol is an example of phenolic disinfectant which can be easily seen in supermarkets.
3. Liquid Chlorine disinfectants:
It is also commonly known as chlorine bleach. It can be added in both hot and cold water to sanitize only your white garments. But to be effective there must be 5.25 to 6.15 percentage of concentration of liquid chlorine and should not be directly poured on clothing but should be diluted beforehand. And this method cannot be used on wool, silk, spandex, dyed and finished fabrics and can cause permanent damage to the clothes.
4. Quaternary disinfectants:
Though it is effective in all water temperatures it cannot be found readily in the market. Many products that have this in them are not suggested to be directly poured onto the clothing but are expected to be diluted and to be added to clothing in the final rinse.
Even though research has explained that most viruses transmitted through personal contact or bodily fluids and are rare through garments and objects. Normal laundry recommendation is to use hot water (above 100 degrees F), with added disinfectant following the proper directions on the bottle followed by a high heat machine drying cycle.
